You Are I AM

MercyMe has a new song out right now titled, 'You Are I AM', and each time I listen to it I love it more and more. The song starts out as one of confession with each verse describing a lie that Satan whispers to the hearts of believers, with the singer admitting to believing each one and many of them being lies that I, and probably most believers, can admit to having believed, too. Doubt, worry, failure, selfishness, shame. Don't all of us struggle with these sins? What matters is how we combat these sins, and that's what the chorus of this song addresses, as the singer turns the focus away from the characteristics of himself and dwells instead on the strong and beautiful attributes of the Lord.

You're the one who conquers giants
You're the one who calls out kings
You shut the mouths of lions
You tell the dead to breathe
You're the one who walks through fire
You take the orphan's hand
You are the one Messiah
You are I AM
You are I AM

When listening to these words, I'm reminded that no matter what thoughts may cross my mind, no matter what troubles come my way, and no matter what trials are heavy on my heart, I have a God who is so much stronger than all of it. I have a God who wants my good. Most importantly, I have a God who has overcome the things of this world through the power of the cross and the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Spiritual warfare is fought in the mind, emotions, and will. Scriptural truth and the work of the Spirit is our primary line of defense.

Our God is the great I AM. He is all things powerful, good, wise, strong, beautiful, pure, and holy. Who are we to doubt His strength? Who are we to doubt His deliverance? He will follow through and remain faithful to His people and promises. All authority on heaven and earth belongs to Him, and once we realize and acknowledge this we can allow His power and love to enter our lives to overcome this world.
