Afternoon Tea: Salt

This morning I realized that I haven't blogged with a cup of tea beside me in quite awhile. Instead, I've become consistent in having a mug of coffee accompany me. Maybe I should change the title of this series from 'Afternoon Tea' to 'Morning Coffee'. Just a thought. Anyway...

'Be wise in the way you act; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone'.
- Colossians 4:5-6

'You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in Heaven'.
- Matthew 5:13-16

Salt is a great metaphor for Christian conversation and behavior. Salt improves taste (I pile it on my chips at every restaurant); in the same way, what believers say and do should leave a 'good taste' for others. Sometimes, I need a reminder in this area. Is what I'm saying blessing others? Does every word out of my mouth glorify my Father? Salt also preserves food; Christians should influence others for the purpose of an eternal perspective through our actions that are motivated by a grace-filled life. We have been shown grace by the Lord even though we are undeserving, therefore we have every reason to show grace to others. As Christians, our lives should be overflowing with courtesy, honesty, and compassion. We are meant to be lights in this world so that others can see the ultimate light, Jesus Christ.
